A Primer on Nerve Conduction Studies by Janine Zargar
Your nervous system is one of the most important systems in your body, and the cooperation between the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and autonomic nerves are crucial to a number of ordinary functions. When nerve damage occurs in the peripheral nerves, which includes nerves leading away from the brain and spinal cord, several things can go wrong with the way connecting muscles react.
Nerve conduction studies are performed in order to test the efficiency and speed with which your nerves can send signals. Physicians place surface electrodes on the skin over nerves at various locations. By sending mild electrical signals, and calculating for distance between electrodes and response time, they are able to determine the approximate speed of actual nerve signals. The test performed will allow your physician to diagnose nerves that have been damaged or destroyed. Nerve conduction studies are commonly used to diagnose disorders affecting muscle strength and control such as Lambert-Eaton syndrome, myasthenia gravis, and Guillain–Barré-Strohl syndrome. It is also used to assist in the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome.
Janine Zargar is the president of Doctors United. Based in New York, the network of medical centers offers Nerve Conduction Studies at its Ardsley, Yonkers, White Plains, and Bronx offices. -
